Sabine HornigApartments and offices subdivided into small rooms are concealed behind expansive fassades. On the vast plazas, you are surrounded by people during the day and phantoms by night. The multitude of dangers or of the measures intended to minimize them frightens you away.
And just as you withdraw, just as you fail to create a space around you, you find yourself bumping into others.
Everyone is one too many. You are constantly creating filth and taking up someone else’s space, and you should either be ashamed of it or display an arrogance which seems obtrusive, even to you.
I come home and feel like my own guest. The furnishings force their way into irrevocability. I do not notice the walls, the size of the apartment, only the floor and the things I bump into.
The half-open door determines, in its continuation, the hallway onto which the space contracts. On the other side, the view and the movements are limited by the windows’ extensions as they are drawn into the space.
You change over to the other side of the window, and no longer know for sure where you have been. The same has become one more for you, the rest seems the same to you.
It doesn’t matter which side you find yourself on, the wall is a mere barrier whose openings only allow air and diffuse information to pass through. The roughly plastered monochrome fassade leaves that which lies behind it undefined. An electronic eye reduces you to your proximity to the wall.
You look through a front window into an empty store, through an open door into a garage, from the prescribed path into the botanical garden. Through a trap door, you feel into a dark beyond. You cannot enter or use this space, it remains an apparition.
The opposite of that alluded to here is not total sight, the opposite of mere seeing is not an all-encompassing perception, but rather possession.
